Carolyn held the phone, a smug smile playing on her lips. “You should’ve stayed dead, old man. You ne should’ve woken up from that hospital bed at Myers Estate. If you hadn’t, none of the mess that followe would’ve happened.”

As she spoke, her fingers glided lightly across the screen. Charles hadn’t locked his phone, so she opene without trouble. The messages from earlier reappeared, everything laid out in plain view. Reading ther second time, a flash of anger crossed Carolyn’s eyes.

“That little bitch never should’ve found out about any of this,” she muttered, and right in front of Charl she selected and deleted every last thread.

Watching the information vanish, Charles grew frantic. He tried to lunge forward and snatch the phone back.

In his agitation, he forgot about his frail health. He forgot he could barely stand on his own. He even forgot he needed his cane to keep his balance.

He took one stumbling step forward–then his body gave way like a cut string. He fell hard against the floor.

The impact was heavy, brutal. His breathing turned ragged. One trembling hand stretched toward Carolyn, still desperate to stop her. “The phone… give it… back…”

Carolyn didn’t move. She just stood there, watching him shake on the ground, trying to call out. It was almost ridiculous.

‘Not a chance,” she said, a triumphant laugh escaping her lips.

The sight was truly pitiful–the once–powerful head of Myers Group, brought so low. If people saw him now, they’d laugh themselves sick.

Fury and helplessness choked Charles, He gasped for air, his breath coming in short, sharp bursis. His hands clawed weakly at the empty space around him, searching for his oxygen tube–but found nothing.

Carolyn’s gaze dropped to the oxygen line, coiled loosely beside him. In his panic, he’d knocked it aside without realizing. Now, as he groped desperately, it lay less than two feet away–close enough to touch, if only he could reach.

Charles was dead. Wasn’t this just fate doing her a favor? The timing couldn’t have been more perfect. That secret she’d just erased–now no one would ever know.

She stole a glance toward the doorway. The hall outside was unusually quiet. No one was around. After hiding out on the estate for days, she knew the layout by heart. This was the main living room–no security cameras, no witnesses. No one would ever know what had happened in this room.

No one would know how Charles died. No one would even suspect.

His health had been failing for months anyway. Death was inevitable–he’d already lived longer than expected. All anyone would find was an old man whose oxygen tube had come loose, who couldn’t get it back in time, and who suffocated because of it. Who would ever look for anything more?

Quickly, Carolyn wiped the phone clean of any fingerprints. She placed it carefully back on the side table. Without so much as a glance at the lifeless body collapsed on the floor, she turned and walked away–as hough she’d never been there at all.

Charles‘ eyes stayed wide open, staring fiercely toward where Carolyn had left. Even in death, his gaze was ixed on his killer. But sadly, no one would ever know what those eyes had seen.

When Greg stepped into the room a while later, arms full of papers, the scene on the floor was the first hing he saw. His voice broke into a panicked cry, “Mr. Myers..!”

Charles was gone.

Eugene was still on the road, chasing down leads about Chloe, when the news reached him. The first call

came from Arthur.

Seeing Arthur’s name light up his screen, Eugene felt no urge to answer. He let it ring until it stopped on

its own.

Just as he thought he’d gotten a moment of quiet, the phone rang again. This time it was Bruce’s cell.

Bruce, riding in the passenger seat, saw Arthur’s name once more and instinctively glanced back at Eugene

in the rear.
