“Clo, if there’s anything I can do to help, just say the word,” Amber murmured softly beside her, keeping her smile intact as she acknowledged another passing guest.

Chloe glanced at the woman next to her–the Bingham family’s eldest daughter, a leading figure in the national research community. Even now, mingling effortlessly, her attention was acutely fixed on Chloe’s situation.

“Staying out of it is how you help,” Chloe replied, her voice low and steady.
