Nance didn’t release her hand. Instead, he guided her firmly toward the busier section of the dance floor.

“Don’t worry–I’ve got you. You’ll pick it up,” Nance said, his smile warmer and more encouraging than before.

Chloe stayed silent.

By the time Eugene arrived at the venue, the guests were already swept up in the lively beat of the music.

He was attending under the name Eric, and the event organizers had taken his presence seriously–senior staff had been assigned to host him personally. They escorted him through displays of the research team’s equipment and data, even sharing some findings that hadn’t yet been made public.

Eugene went through the motions politely, but his attention was elsewhere. He’d been delayed earlier, and now that he was finally inside, his gaze immediately drifted toward the dance floor.

“Mr. Meader, our data leads the field globally. Compared to what’s commercially available now, the advantages are quite clear-”

Eugene’s eyes scanned the room and found her almost instantly.

She was dancing with someone else.

A moment later, she stumbled and stepped squarely on Nance’s foot.

A faint, almost involuntary smile touched Eugene’s lips

The official beside him noticed Eugene watching the dancers and assumed he was interested. With a quick, discreet signal, a woman in an elegant cocktail dress approached–tall, poised, with the trained grace of a performer.

“This is Lillian Chapman. She’s an accomplished dancer–several international awards under her belt. Knows every style you could think of,” the official said warmly. “Mr. Meader, please feel free to enjoy the evening.”

With a respectful nod, he stepped back, leaving Eugene with Lillian.

“It’s an honor to share a dance with you, Mr. Meader,” Lillian said, her voice smooth as she offered her hand.

Eugene glanced at her. She was striking, confident, exactly the kind of partner most men would want–but his attention drifted again to where Chloe and Nance were still moving clumsily nearby. After a brief pause, he accepted Lillian’s hand and led her smoothly onto the floor.

Lillian was thrilled. Not only was Eric Meader one of the most influential figures here, he was also undeniably handsome.

Lillian was a professional; she could adapt to any rhythm. But even she found some of his turns unexpectedly broad, his movements carrying them steadily toward the very center of the floor.

Shouldn’t they stay toward the edge, where there was more space and less attention? Why head into the crowd?
