When she turned, a completely different man stood before her.
Seeing Nance there, Lillian was thrown completely off balance.
Where had the billionaire gone?
Where was he now?
Her eyes swept the room, but Nance simply offered a light, courteous smile. “The dance isn’t over yet, miss. It’s best not to lose focus.”
Before she could gather her thoughts, his hand closed over hers, guiding her smoothly into the next steps.
Lillian was utterly confused.
When had they switched partners?
How did Nance end up in front of her–and where did the billionaire disappear to?
As they moved across the floor, she finally caught sight of him in a quieter corner of the ballroom. And the woman in his arms was…
Wasn’t that the Binghams‘ daughter?
The same one who’d been dancing with Nance earlier?
Hold on…
What in the world was going on?
Meanwhile, Chloe was just as disoriented. When she lifted her gaze, she found herself looking straight into Eugene’s handsome yet visibly irritated face. For a second, her mind went blank.
Where had Eugene come from?
Catching her own startled expression, she quickly schooled her features into something cool and detached, trying to pull her hand from his.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
Eugene had anticipated her resistance. His grip tightened, and the hand resting on her waist drew her even closer.
“What am I doing?” he murmured, his voice low and deliberate near her ear. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that? You sleep with me and then act like nothing happened. That’s pretty cold, don’t you think? I’d call that irresponsible.”
Chloe almost laughed out loud. So he was still hung up on that?
“I have no idea what you’re talking about. Let me go.” She tried again to free her hand, but Eugene held firm. showing no intention of releasing her.
“Pretending you don’t know me, is that it?” His tone dipped, softening just a fraction. “All right then, Ms. Bingham. I’m Eugene. Nice to meet you. I’d like to get to know you better.”

Her heart gave an unexpected tag. He was making it wasn’t okay with what she was doing
I said I don’t know what you mean she insisted, keeping her voice hushed but firm. If you don’t let go
Eugene didn’t give her the chance. His hand at her waistburned through the fabric of her dress as he led her deftly across the polished floor
With him guiding her, everything felt strangely effortley Compared to dancing with Nance, her steps were surer, her turns more natural, as if her body remembered moves her mind had tried to forget.
The dance flowed smoothly, almost too smoothly, and Chloe caught herself wondering–what was happening to her?
It wasn’t until the music faded and the final steps stilled that she snapped back to reality.
She’d made it through the whole dance without once stepping on his feet.
The realization gave her pause.
“Your body doesn’t lie,” Eugene whispered, his breath warm against her ear. “Keep pretending you don’t know me, and I will get upset.”
Chloe looked up at his face, so close to hers now. She glanced over toward Nance, who was already chatting with another woman nearby, and felt her expression harden.
Eugene was getting in the way. She shouldn’t be anywhere near him right now.
All pretense of politeness left her. “You’re overstepping she stated flatly.
She tried to pull away once more, but Eugene didn’t release her. This time, Chloe didn’t hold back.
She yanked her arm back hard. Eugene, not expecting her to use force, loosened his grip just enough to keep from hurting her–and fell right into her trap.
In one swift motion, she drove her elbow straight into his stomach.
“Ugh.” He gritted his teeth, struggling to keep his expression neutral. “Trying to kill your husband, are you?”
