Chloe met Eugene’s strained expression with a cool glare before turning gracefully on her heel and walking

away.

Not far off, Carl and Noah had been observing the whole exchange. As Chloe approached, she slipped her arm through Carl’s with a practiced smile.

Carl murmured something to her, his eyes flickering toward Eugene. Chloe offered little in reply, gently steering the older man away from the scene.

Eugene stood rooted in place, drawing in a slow, steadying breath. He watched Chloe disappear into the crowd with Carl and Noah, his expression gradually hardening.

She certainly knew how to land a blow. Any harder and she might have shattered something.

What was she really doing here?

Getting close to the Binghams–was it for their sake? Or was she leveraging their connections for something else?

His mind replayed the image of Chloe dancing with Nance earlier. Eugene’s gaze instinctively swept the room until it found him.

Across the floor, Nance caught his eye and began making his way over, a polite smile already in place.

Eugene turned away before they could make contact, acting as though he hadn’t seen him, and strode off without a backward glance.

Nothing held his attention now.

All he could think about was why Chloe had shown up tonight. What was she after?

Making the first move to dance with Nance… was he her target?

Did she actually find that polished, princely facade appealing?

She had better taste than that, surely.

Eugene didn’t slow down until he reached the entrance. Landon spotted him and moved to intercept, smiling as he gestured toward a small group nearby.

“These editors from Tech Today would love a quick word. And this is the event coordinator-”

“We’re leaving.” Eugene cut him off mid–sentence, breezing past without breaking stride.

Recognizing that stormy look, Landon offered an apologetic shrug to the guests. “Looks like he’s hit his limit for the night. Sorry about that–I’ll follow up soon!

After a few quick pleasantries, Landon hurried after him

Once inside the car and pulling away from the curb, the tension around Eugene was palpable. He sat in brooding silence, the air between them thick with unrest.

Landon paused, choosing his words. Someone like Chloe with someone like Eugene… it was like watching two storms collide. Fascinating, and more than a little dangerous.

“You call yourself an expert with women. Explain it to me,” Eugene pressed, his tone leaving no room for deflection.

Landon sighed softly. “It’s tricky. I mean, given who you are, walking away doesn’t exactly add up.”

Eugene shot him a look. “In plain English.”

“What if she’s moved on? Found someone… I don’t know, more suitable?”

Eugene’s eyes darkened.

“Take Nance, for instance. He’s in line to inherit the Srindian throne. If she ends up with him, she’s set for life. That’s the kind of security most people dream of,” Landon added with a shrug. “Can you blame her?”

Eugene studied Landon’s face, then let a slow, humorless smile touch his lips. “You know, that almost sounds reasonable.”

“Really?” Landon had mostly been talking off the top of his head. Seeing Eugene take it seriously gave him

pause.

This was the man who’d fixated on Chloe for years. A few casual comments wouldn’t shake him–otherwise, he wouldn’t be Eugene.

“If she really had fallen for someone like Nance, that would be one thing,” Eugene said, his voice dropping, cool and resolved. “But she’d never go for that type. Whatever game she’s playing now… as long as I’m breathing, she only has one path forward.”
