When Robert said that, Landon simply shrugged it off. "That's common knowledge. What's there to look into?"
He glanced at Eugene, completely lost.
"It's rare, sure, but why the interest?" Robert asked, puzzled. "There's plenty of fancy jewelry out there. Don't tell me our Mr. Billionaire has his eye on this one piece."
"Come on," Landon cut in. "Eugene can buy any jewel he wants. That thing belongs to Nance. No way he'd be after it."
"Then why dig into it?" Robert pressed, his eyes fixed on Eugene.
"If I'm right, the reason Chloe got close to Nance was to get her hands on that pink diamond."
"She wants the diamond?" Landon blurted out, the first to react. "You can get a diamond like that in any size if you've got the cash—and if there's anyone who's never short, it's you, boss. If she liked diamonds, all she had to do was say the word. You'd have gotten her whatever she wanted." He sounded irritated. "What's her deal? Why go after Nance's pink diamond?"
"That's exactly what's bothering me," Eugene said. "If the diamond really is what she's after, what does she need it for?" If Chloe wanted something rare, she only had to ask. He could've gotten it for her in a heartbeat.
Instead, she'd been avoiding everyone and cozying up to Nance. It seemed that diamond was all she cared about.
Every time they met, her attention was fixed on Nance—or more precisely, on the pink diamond he wore.
Eugene was certain Nance hadn't been wearing it at dinner. Chloe had glanced at his chest, noticed it wasn't there, and then barely looked at Nance again.
And she claimed she was interested in him.
What a load of nonsense.
What was she trying to hide?
Eugene clenched his fists, his displeasure obvious.
"Since when does my mom care about diamonds?" Robert crossed his arms, lips pursed in thought. "She's never been into that kind of thing."
"What if someone's forcing her to get the diamond?" Landon joked. "You know, like in those TV shows—if she doesn't get it, something bad happens." The next second, Eugene grabbed him by the collar, nearly lifting him off the floor.
"Say that again," Eugene demanded, his voice tight with anger.
Landon was taken aback. He'd just been kidding around—how had that set him off?
