What on earth had Eugene done to convince Nance to part with something so precious? What kind of history did they share—or were they close enough that he could just walk away with something this valuable, just like that?
Her hand tightened around the pink diamond, yet her heart felt heavier than before. Her first task was complete. She should have felt relieved, but instead, a deeper sense of uncertainty settled over her.
That Eugene... ugh.
The sedan Chloe was riding in pulled up to a budget motel on the outskirts of town. She stepped out and headed straight inside, not looking back.
A plain black sedan drove slowly past the motel a moment later, nothing about it standing out.
"Chloe just entered that budget motel," Landon relayed to Eugene over the phone, passing along the update from his team. "We sent someone in to check it out. Place looks ordinary—cheap rates, maybe a hundred bucks a night tops."
Eugene glanced down at the report in his hands and allowed a faint smile to touch his lips.
"That's just the surface. What's really inside probably tells a different story."
Landon tucked the folder away and nodded. "Exactly what I thought. I had a contact who knows this stuff take a closer look. The interior layout is... unexpected."
He leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. "The motel's exterior is basically a front. Inside, it's wired up and structured like something else entirely. Whoever owns that place must have serious backing—otherwise they'd never get away with building it out so openly."
"So what if they have connections?" Eugene's smile widened, cool and unbothered.
"The pink diamond is in Chloe's hands now. What's her next move?" Landon frowned. "Whoever's pressuring her—they must have serious leverage. Or maybe they've got something on her, and she's got no choice but to play along."
"Who they are doesn't matter," Eugene said, rising to his feet and pinching the bridge of his nose. "If they want to play games, we'll play. Remember what I said—when it comes to Chloe, we do whatever it takes."
"Don't worry, I'll handle it." Landon's voice was steady. "This one's tricky—they're in the shadows, we're in the light. Might as well make it interesting."
Eugene gave a low sound of acknowledgment and watched Landon exit. He then walked into the adjoining bedroom, where Robert was seated at the desk, hunched over something in his arms, eyes fixed on the computer screen.
The screen was divided into several sections, large and small—all clearly surveillance footage. And every scene was from Myers Estate.
"Found anything?"
