This time, she didn't bother pretending not to recognize him or keeping her defenses up—she just drove straight back to the Riverville Prime Residences.
There were two condos in the building: one belonged to Eugene, the other to Chloe.
Robert had been staying at Eugene's place lately, while Chloe's had stayed empty the whole time.
When Chloe brought Eugene inside, he glanced around, slightly surprised. All this time, her place was right here in the same complex, and he was only finding out now.
That kid Robert—how come he hadn't mentioned a thing?
"Carl helped me get this place. It's under his name," Chloe explained with a shrug. "Back then, we didn't want to stir up unnecessary attention. I was still legally married to Arthur."
"Got it," Eugene replied softly as he stepped inside.
The space felt cozy, decorated just the way she liked it.
Still, it annoyed him that he'd been kept in the dark until now.
Chloe walked into the bedroom and looked around. Everything was just as she'd left it. Being back in this familiar room finally let her relax.
"Carl's a friend of mine. The Binghams went through some trouble a while back, and I helped them out. So when I needed a favor this time, I reached out to them." She kept her explanation brief. "As for Nance—yeah, I got to know him through the Binghams because of that pink diamond."
"I know," Eugene said.
"I don't have any feelings for Nance. Not at all." Chloe's tone was serious, her expression sincere, as if she were trying hard to make sure he understood.
Eugene watched her, then walked over with a faint smile.
"I know. And even if you did, he wouldn't feel the same way about you. I can tell you that for sure." He took her hand. "You're mine now. No one else gets to have feelings for you. Anyone who tries will have to deal with me first."
The way he talked about death and fighting so casually—Chloe gave him a look, reached up, and gently covered his mouth.
"Don't say things like that."
Her voice was soft, almost a whisper.
"Alright, I won't. As long as you're with me, I'm not going anywhere. I plan on living a long life and annoying you forever. In this life, the next one, and all the ones after that—you're mine. No matter what you become, even if it's a bug, I'll become one too and follow you around."
