"You're safe now."
Chloe didn't reply. Instead, she spun around and threw herself into Eugene's arms so suddenly that he staggered a step before steadying himself.
Feeling her collide against him, he wrapped his arms tightly around her and held on—he wasn't about to let go again.
In that moment, everything felt worth it. She hadn't given up on him after all.
"Eugene... I'm sorry."
Chloe clung to him, burying her face against his chest. Surrounded by his warmth, all the emotions she'd held back came rushing to the surface. Why keep fighting it? If she was going to throw caution to the wind, there was nothing left to be afraid of.
She had missed him—so much it ached. Every little thing, even his scent, brought back a wave of longing.
Pressed against him now, she finally felt a sense of calm wash over her. All the walls she'd built over the past few days just crumbled away.
Her eyes grew damp. She tried to hold the tears in, but a few escaped anyway, tracing lines down her cheeks.
"I'm still here, you know. No need for tears," Eugene murmured, a hint of teasing in his voice.
"Hush," Chloe mumbled, giving his chest a light thump. She stayed right where she was, ear pressed to him, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat. It was the only thing that seemed to quiet the storm inside her.
"Not even married yet and you're already trying to knock me out," Eugene said, pulling her even closer.
A long while passed before Chloe finally lifted her head.
Her cheeks were flushed, her eyelashes still glistening. She met his eyes and managed a soft, shaky smile.
"I must look like a mess," she said quietly.
"Never. Even when you're ninety, you'll still be the Chloe I love. The one I'll always keep close." Eugene brushed his thumb along her cheek, then leaned down and gently kissed the tear track at the corner of her eye.
Seeing that, Chloe let out a breathy, helpless laugh. "I lied to you."
"I know."
"I didn't even say what about."
"Doesn't matter. I know," Eugene said softly. "Was it saying you weren't into me when you really are? Or pretending you didn't know me when you couldn't stay away? Or making up some excuse about getting close to Nance, then claiming you were interested in him?"
Chloe stayed silent. He'd listed so many things—had she really lied that much?
