Chloe pulled away from him. Eugene's expression darkened at the gesture.
"Listen to me, Eugene.
"I need to cut ties with my past. It's going to take a little time. What I can promise is that it won't be long—I'll make it as quick as possible." There were still two things she had to wrap up, no matter what it took.
Eugene didn't look pleased. He kept his eyes fixed on her, his stare growing more intense by the second.
"I have to go. I need to get back," Chloe said, lowering her voice. "Don't waste your time or energy on my problems. This is my mess to clean up. If you get involved, you'll only make things more complicated. So just promise me one thing."
Her tone grew steadier. "Take care of Robert for me. And about Charles—let me know if you find anything out."
As she spoke, she pulled out her phone and tapped a number. A moment later, Eugene's phone buzzed in his pocket.
He didn't bother checking the screen. He already knew who it was.
"That's my number. Only use it if it's about Charles. Otherwise, don't reach out. When I can, I'll get in touch with you." Chloe tucked her phone away. "Just give me some time, Eugene. I'll come back."
She didn't say anything else, just held his gaze seriously.
Eugene watched her in silence. After what felt like a long moment, he finally replied quietly, "Alright. I get it."
"Thank you... for loving someone as broken as me." Chloe stepped forward, wrapped her arms around him, and let herself soak in his warmth for a few seconds before letting go.
"I'm leaving. Tell Robert I love you both—so much." With that, she turned and walked away without looking back.
Eugene stood motionless. Only when he heard a car engine start and fade into the distance did he finally move.
He took out his phone, saved the number Chloe had just called from, and then dialed another. When the line connected, he kept his voice low.
"Keep an eye on her. I want to know who's behind all of this. And make sure she doesn't find out."
He ended the call. Who was this person? Why did they have such a grip on Chloe? He needed to figure it out.
Whatever the answer was, he wasn't about to let her face it alone.

After leaving Riverville Prime, Chloe drove back to the motel where she'd been staying.
It was nearly midnight by the time she arrived.
