Charles' death was linked to Carolyn. Chloe had been searching everywhere for her, wanting nothing more than to tear her apart. But Carolyn knew how to stay hidden—until now.
Somehow, here she was, at a place like this. They hadn't even been looking for her, yet the universe seemed to finally cut them a break, letting Carolyn walk right into their line of sight.
"I'm calling Chloe," Oralia said, already pulling out her phone.
"Don't tip her off," Robert cut in, his voice low.
"Then what? What if she slips away?" Oralia insisted. After everything Carolyn had done, she deserved to be behind bars—or worse. And now, showing up at the ceremony? This was their chance.
"First, we make sure it's really her. Figure out why she's here. Then we block every exit so she can't run." Robert had Bruce on speed dial. Once they confirmed it was Carolyn, they could coordinate—Bruce inside, him outside—and make sure she didn't get away.
His mom already had enough to deal with. He could handle this. No need to worry her.
Besides, he still had Bruce.
With that, Robert crouched low and started moving forward.
Oralia followed closely, whispering, "Robert, be careful."
He didn't reply, just kept advancing, staying out of sight as he closed in on the figure ahead.
The closer he got, the clearer she became. Even with her hair cut short, that face was unmistakable—eighty percent Carolyn, if not more.
If he could just get near enough to hear her voice, he'd know for sure.
A woman like that... she'd have fit right in with the worst traitors in history.
Robert edged closer, careful to stay hidden. One photo was all he needed—run it through facial recognition software and they'd have their answer.
"Careful—ah!"
A muffled gasp came from behind him. Robert glanced back to see Oralia clutching her mouth, face flushed, tears welling in her eyes.
"What happened?" he whispered.
"I-I got nervous and twisted my ankle," she breathed out, clearly in pain. She'd missed a step but held back a scream. Now her foot throbbed.
Robert's expression tightened. "Go find my mom. Tell her we spotted Carolyn."
Damn it.
