Chloe let go immediately. She could never really hurt him—she just wanted him to stop messing around.

"What are you doing?" She turned her face away and lowered her voice, frustration simmering beneath her words.

"You think I'm messing around?"

The phrase struck Eugene as almost laughable.

"I'm not toying with you. I just—" Didn't want you pulled into this. Didn't want you getting hurt.
