Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name: “Whitty!”
The voice sounded extremely panicked.
In a daze. I saw Reginald running toward me.
Since the murderer dared to kidnap me in broad daylight, it meant he must have more tricks up
his sleeve.
I wanted to tell Reginald to leave, but no matter how hard I tried. I couldn’t make a sound.
I felt my body growing heavier and heavier, sinking uncontrollably, and my eyelids drooped lower and lower.
Before long, I lost consciousness and fell into deep darkness.

When I woke up again, everything before my eyes was pitch black, and the silence around me was almost unnatural.
A jolt of fear shot through me. Instinctively, I reached behind my ear, only to realize that my hearing aid had been taken away.
A wave of panic swept over me.
Without my hearing aid, I was completely deaf. In a place as dangerous as this, being unable to hear was a fatal disadvantage!
Despair instantly flooded my heart.
Suddenly, I felt someone holding my hand
Instinctively, I tried to shake it off, but that hand gripped mine tightly and refused to let go.
Slowly, I realized something–the warmth of this hand was so familiar
It was Reginald!
I slowly turned around and finally saw his outline.

The room was so dark that I couldn’t communicate with him verbally. All I could do was hold his hand tightly, as if I could draw strength from him that way.
Not long after, the door to the room was opened from the outside.
A middle–aged man walked in and turned on the light.
Almost at the same time, Reginald pulled me behind him.
I saw them talking, but I couldn’t hear a single word.
In the end, the middle–aged man left some bread and water, then turned around, locked the door, and left.
With the light on, I tried to ask Reginald, “What did you just say to each other?”
He let
go of my hand, then used sign language to tell me, “He said these things are for us to eat.”
For a moment, I couldn’t react. Surprised, I also asked in sign language, “When did you learn sign language?”
Reginald smiled gently and signed, “The year I graduated from high school.”
I couldn’t help but pause. That meant he had learned sign language after I lost my hearing.
These past few years, I had always worn a hearing aid and rarely needed sign language, so I never knew he had secretly learned it.
If it weren’t for what happened today, would he have never told me, and just kept quietly doing things for me in secret?
My heart suddenly felt both sore and soft, and I was at a loss for words.
Seeing that I looked like I was about to cry, Reginald panicked, hurried over, and hugged me tightly.
I took a moment to compose myself, then suddenly thought of something. I raised my hand and lightly hit him: “Are you stupid? Why did you run over here so recklessly?”
Reginald looked helpless. “I wasn’t thinking that much at the time.”
