For a moment, I felt as if the sky was collapsing and the earth was shattering.
Without a second thought, I got up and ran toward the house.
I couldn’t leave him there alone!
But halfway there, someone grabbed me tightly from behind.
Calvin’s deep voice sounded: “Don’t go!”
I turned to look at him, my face already covered in tears: “Reginald is still inside!”
“Calvin, can you save him?!”
The man was dressed in a police uniform, a complex mix of emotions flickering in his eyes. In the end, he nodded to me with certainty: “Don’t worry, I will save him.”
“Wait for me outside.”
With that, he let go of my hand and led his team charging into the house.
I stood outside the house, feeling as if my whole body had been frozen numb. My eyes were fixed on the doorway, not daring to blink even once.
Reginald, at this moment, had traded his own life for my chance to survive.
Time seemed to pass especially slowly.
It was a long while before I finally saw Reginald being carried out.
He lay on the stretcher, covered in blood, barely clinging to life.
I don’t know where I suddenly found the strength, but I rushed forward, looking at him in this state, feeling as if my heart was being torn apart, not daring to touch him.
Reginald’s neck had been slashed, leaving him unable to speak. He could only use all his strength to lift his hand and gently wipe the tears from my face.
He gestured: “I’m fine, don’t cry.”
Then, he closed his eyes and lost consciousness.
The ambulance arrived in time and took Reginald straight into the operating room.
I sat on the bench outside the operating room, my whole body still trembling uncontrollably.
Calvin sat silently beside me, wanting to comfort me but not knowing what to say.
In the end, he could only say awkwardly, “Don’t worry, he’ll be fine.”
I looked up at him with a pale face and said, “Thank you for saving us.
As soon as I spoke, I realized how hoarse my voice was.
Calvin pressed his thin lips together, his expression complicated, and said, “It’s our duty. I was late.”
I shook
my
head: “You couldn’t have known he would take me at that moment.”
Just saying these few words had exhausted all my strength.
I turned my head to look at the tightly closed doors of the operating room, sinking back into
silence.
Calvin had to return to the station to handle the case. I didn’t even remember when he left.
During the long wait, I prayed to every god and deity I could think of.
Please, don’t let Reginald leave me…..
There was a soft “click.”
The door to the operating room opened.
I hurried to catch up and heard the doctor say, “The external injuries are severe, and he has lost a lot of blood. Whether he wakes up depends on his luck…”
I nodded numbly.
In the days that followed, I felt as if I had fallen into a long nightmare.
After Reginald spent several days in the ICU, he was finally transferred to a regular ward,
But half a month passed, and he still showed no sign of waking up.
Calvin visited several times, once with his colleagues to take my statement, and once on a personal visit.
Every day, I read to Reginald and replaced the flowers in his room with fresh ones.
I wanted him to see the most beautiful flowers as soon as he woke up.
