Pierce frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Do you remember my cousin, Sienna? She graduated but can't find a job, so she came to me for help."
Pierce seemed to search his memory. "Your cousin?"
"Yeah, Elara's daughter. She used to be our little messenger, delivering things from you to me."
Pierce said, "I don't really remember."
Seraphina gathered her courage and asked again, "Could you help arrange something? Any job is fine, even manual labor."
Pierce replied, "Have her send in her resume. The company has HR specifically for this."
It was a polite refusal. As a tech industry giant, almost everyone who worked at Prescott Enterprises came from elite universities.
Seraphina had thought that even if Sienna couldn't do technical work, she could at least serve coffee or make copies.
But Pierce's tone made his subtext crystal clear—they were about to sever all ties, and he didn't want to use his connections for her. Not even for a lowly assistant position.
Or perhaps he was afraid his new girlfriend would misunderstand if he hired his ex-wife's relative.
What a shining beacon of male devotion!
Seraphina nodded, said nothing more, and turned to walk out the door.
The first thing she did when she got to the hospital was open her computer and change the first author of her paper. She deleted "Seraphina Somerset" and typed in "Lyra Langley." Then, she hit send.
After that, she called Elara.
Elara couldn't hold back and immediately started screaming over the phone, "Seraphina, are you messing with me?! I raised you like my own daughter for six years, and you won't even help with this tiny favor? What, now that you're the CEO's wife and living the high life, you're afraid us poor relatives are going to drag you down?! Fine! Just pretend all those years of my sacrifice were fed to the dogs! Don't ever step foot in our house again! Our humble house isn't worthy of the great Mrs. Prescott!"
Listening to the dial tone, Seraphina buried her face in her hands and let out a heavy sigh.
When Lyra walked into the office, she greeted her with a bright smile, "Seraphina, I'm officially starting work today. Since we're sharing an office, as my old classmate, you have to look out for the new girl!"
Before Seraphina could reply, Lyra dashed over to the window and waved enthusiastically at someone below.
Seraphina tilted her head slightly to look. Pierce was standing by his car down below, smiling up at Lyra and giving a gentle wave.
