Seraphina's expression shifted slightly, and she turned her head away, unwilling to even look at him.
Silas immediately stood up, stepping protectively in front of her. His voice was cold as he addressed Pierce. "Mr. Prescott, Seraphina needs to rest right now. If you have business to attend to, please go do it. Your phone constantly ringing is only going to disturb her."
Pierce lifted his gaze to look at the other man.
Not too long ago, the person he despised most in this world was Silas Sterling.
But ever since he found out he wasn't the father of Seraphina's child, Pierce actually found Silas slightly more tolerable to look at.
He pulled his gaze away and looked at Seraphina, his tone almost explanatory. "It was the police calling to give me the latest updates on the case. I haven't answered any of the other calls."
Seraphina remained silent, still refusing to look at him.
Silas pressed on. "Mr. Prescott, I really think you should leave. Your presence here is only going to negatively affect her mood."
Pierce immediately raised an eyebrow, a quiet fury brewing in his eyes. "I am her husband. It is my right to be here by her side. In what capacity, exactly, is Dr. Sterling standing here?"
Silas hadn't expected Pierce to suddenly lash out. Given what Seraphina had endured over the last three years, he already had a terrible impression of the man.
A spark of anger ignited within him, too. However, Silas was naturally gentle and humble; even when furious, he maintained a level of restraint. "I am Seraphina's colleague, and right now, I'm working alongside her. I was also the anesthesiologist for her surgery. Emotionally and professionally, I have every right to be here. Furthermore, my presence is far more useful than yours, Mr. Prescott."
Pierce's tone was icy. "Is my wife your only patient, Dr. Sterling? Even her lead surgeon didn't stay behind. How much use can an anesthesiologist really be? What are you going to do, give her a shot when the pain gets too bad?"
Silas's usually calm expression finally cracked into open anger. "Doesn't it weigh on your conscience to say that, Mr. Prescott? Every single time she's been brought into the hospital over these past few years, I've been the one taking care of her. Where exactly were you, her so-called husband?"
"Does your hospital administration know you're this attentive to another man's wife? Does your mentor know?"
"Enough!" Seraphina snapped sharply. "If you two are going to argue, take it outside! Do you think it's too quiet in here for me?"
She pointed weakly toward the door. "Get out."
