Just as he hit send, a call came through.
Pierce had put his phone on silent before returning to the room, so only the glowing screen notified him that Franklin was calling. The room remained completely quiet.
He stared at the name 'Franklin' flashing on the screen and instantly rejected the call.
Franklin tried again. Pierce declined it once more and promptly moved the number to his blocked list.
There was about half an hour of peace before another call came through.
This time, it was Lyra.
He hesitated for a moment, then stood up and quietly slipped out of the room. After making sure the door was firmly shut and Seraphina was still fast asleep inside, he answered.
Even out in the hall where Seraphina couldn't possibly hear him, he kept his voice low. "What is it?"
Lyra sounded hesitant. "Franklin just called me in a total panic. He said you blocked him. What happened? Aren't you two best friends?"
Pierce's tone was flat. "This is between him and me. If he asks you about it again, just tell him you don't know and brush him off."
Feigning earnest concern, Lyra gently advised, "You guys have been friends for so many years. Is there anything that can't be talked out? At our age, finding a friend who truly knows you is so rare. If he misspoke, try not to take it to heart. Just sit down and talk it through, okay?"
"I know you mean well, but this is between Franklin and me. Stay out of it. Look, I'm in the middle of something. I have to go."
"Wait..." Lyra quickly interjected. "Is this about Seraphina?"
Gripping his phone, Pierce let out a low "Yeah."
