The young nurse immediately ran off to make the call.
But Dr. Wallace would take time to arrive, so Lyra had no choice but to brace herself and head over to bed 54.
By the time she arrived, several other nurses were already crowding the room.
One of them quickly briefed her. "Dr. Langley, the patient appears to be having a sudden myocardial infarction. It was several minutes before the family noticed. Her vitals are dropping rapidly. Should we get the ECMO ready?"
Lyra had no idea what that acronym meant.
But her pride wouldn't let her ask the nurses for clarification.
She was supposedly the top physician in the Cardiology department now; asking something so basic would completely expose her incompetence.
Feigning composure, Lyra asked, "Are we certain it's a heart attack?"
The nurse hesitated, looking confused. "Well... probably? Aren't you supposed to be the one giving the official diagnosis? I'm just a nurse."
Lyra gritted her teeth inwardly.
How could her luck be this incredibly terrible?
Dr. Wallace was off today, and this patient just had to suffer a heart attack right now.
"It's dropping! Her blood pressure is plummeting!"
The nurse standing nearby was fraught with panic. "Dr. Langley, please, you need to make the call! Do we set up the ECMO or not?"
Lyra looked down, furiously tapping away at her phone.
She wasn't entirely sure how to spell the medical term, so she just guessed a few letters in the search bar.
After several failed attempts, she still couldn't find a definitive answer.
A thin layer of sweat formed on her forehead. The more panicked she felt, the harder her hands trembled.
"Doctor!"
The terrified family member standing nearby suddenly dropped to his knees with a loud thud. "Please, save my mother! She's the only family I have left! I don't care how much it costs, I'll pay anything! Please, make the call! Give her whatever medicine she needs!"
"This is bad! The patient's pupils are dilating!"
Lyra gritted her teeth. "Do it! All of you, go to the pharmacy and get the medication! Save her, right now!"
