Tears still clung to Lyra's cheeks, but she immediately put on a sickeningly "gracious" act. "Pierce, your grandfather is older and has high blood pressure. As the younger generation, we should just let him vent. Don't fight him on this."
Pierce gave a tight nod. "I know."
"Seraphina and I have been classmates for years. I know her well. She's open-minded and generous. She won't hold a grudge against him for this. After all, he's your family. For your sake, she'll forgive him, right?"
Alistair had gotten half of his anger out through the slap and the screaming.
But Lyra's words instantly set him off again. "What do you mean, 'forgive me'? I don't need her forgiveness! Did I say a single word that wasn't true? She messed around with her own stepdad when she was practically still a kid! If she isn't a tramp, what is she? Use your brain, Pierce! You've been out of the country for three years and she didn't come looking for you once! She doesn't have an ounce of love for you in her heart!"
"I know!" Pierce roared, his voice thick with raw frustration. "I know she doesn't love me! I know she only married me to repay her aunt and uncle for raising her, so the Prescott family would bail out their business! I know all of that! You don't need to remind me!"
The grandfather and grandson looked ready to tear each other apart.
Right then, the hospital Director and Officer Fletcher walked into the room.
Despite the crowd, the room went so dead silent you could hear a pin drop.
The atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Officer Fletcher walked over and nodded at Pierce. "Mr. Prescott, you made it. Perfect timing. I just finished going over the situation with the Director. Step outside with me for a minute."
Pierce gave a curt nod and followed the officer into the hall.
The Director stayed behind, turning to the young nurse. "How is Dr. Langley's condition?"
