Lana asked, "Dr. Somerset, did your husband really... pass away?"
Lana was a great kid in every way, except she was extremely traditional about hierarchy. She always called her 'Dr. Somerset' as a mentor, so naturally, she felt obligated to respectfully inquire about her mentor's husband.
At the time, Pierce had completely vanished, so all Seraphina could answer was, "I don't know either."
The director finally signed "Approved" on her transfer form. "Fine, since you've made up your mind, I won't say anything else. Ultimately, I failed you on this one. The State Medical Center is a bigger platform. If you want to go, go."
In all fairness, the director was a decent old man. He usually treated her quite well.
But the land for the new branch and those multimillion-dollar machines were far too crucial for Metropolitan General. He was the director; he had to look at the bigger picture. Sacrificing her to benefit the entire hospital—she would have made the exact same choice if she were in his position.
Seraphina didn't hold a grudge against him, but if she stayed here, running into Lyra would be inevitable. And running into Lyra meant inevitably running into Pierce. She really didn't want to see him again.
Getting off work on time was a rarity that afternoon, but Seraphina purposely stalled, taking her time taking off her white coat for a full thirty minutes after Lyra left.
Lana was on the night shift and was currently on the phone with her boyfriend. "I can't, I really can't leave. The hospital is slammed right now..."
Seraphina asked, "What's wrong?"
Lana sighed in frustration. "My boyfriend lost his house keys and can't get in, so he came here to get mine. But I have to go do rounds right now, and then I have a consultation. I seriously can't step away."
Seraphina said, "Give me the keys. I'll take them down to him."
Lana looked at her like a savior. "Oh my god, thank you so much, Dr. Somerset!"
Seraphina took the keys and headed downstairs, quickly spotting Zachary's car in the parking lot.
The young man was sitting in his black Honda, looking at his phone.
Knock, knock—
She tapped on the window.
Seeing Seraphina, the guy immediately rolled down the window. "Dr. Somerset!"
