He Finally Noticed Me Right When I Was Leaving novel Chapter 14

Attached to the post was a photo of a pastry box from Boulangerie Patisserie.

Boulangerie Patisserie was a wildly popular bakery. If you didn't stand in line for two or three hours, there was no chance of getting anything.

In the bottom left corner of the picture, a hand was visible.

A man's hand. Large, lean, with strong knuckles and faint veins pulsing beneath the skin. The ring finger was completely bare, not even a faded tan line remained.

She knew that hand far too well. It had held hers as they walked through every street and alley of the city. It had peeled walnuts and pine nuts for her. It had gently, tenderly caressed her face, and explored every intimate corner of her body.

They really weren't close anymore. Just two people who had broken several beds together.

The sweet, dirty promises from their honeymoon phase still echoed in her ears, yet the passenger seat next to the owner of that hand was already occupied by someone else.

Perhaps because she had walked for hours in the heavy snow yesterday, Seraphina felt a slight stuffiness in her nose. She dug through her bags for some cold medicine, swallowed a few pills, wrapped herself in a blanket, and groggily drifted off to sleep.

She was jolted awake by a feather-light touch against her forehead. She practically shot up, hugging her knees in pure panic as she glared defensively at the intruder.

Pierce was caught off guard by her reaction. "What are you doing? Do you really need to act like you're terrified?"

Seeing it was him, Seraphina let out a small sigh of relief. "What are you doing in my room? Where's Lyra?"

Pierce leaned over and reached his hand out to touch her again.

Seraphina slapped his hand away with a sharp, resounding smack. This time, it was her turn to ask, "What are you doing?"

Pierce's brow furrowed. He grabbed her arm, forcefully pulled her closer, and pressed the back of his hand to her forehead. "You have a fever."

Seraphina already knew she had a fever. While she had been sleeping, she had alternated between burning hot and shivering cold, and her head was spinning.
