He hadn't been sure if he was happy or heartbroken. The alcohol had left his mind hazy, and as he ran his fingers over the coat she had left draped on the back of the sofa, a chaotic storm of emotions tore through him.
When she had finally walked through the door, he hadn't been able to control the surge of feelings and kissed her fiercely.
She hadn't pushed him away.
He had been ecstatic, deepening the kiss with everything he had—until Lyra unexpectedly showed up.
For a split second, he had desperately wanted to see rage in her eyes. He wanted her to scream at him, to demand to know what the hell was going on between him and Lyra.
But she hadn't done that either.
She had accepted it all with unnatural calm, as if she genuinely didn't care how he had spent the last few years, or who he had spent them with.
And then, she asked for a divorce.
Pierce closed his eyes, tormented, as the pieces finally snapped together in his mind. "So... Caspian targeted you because I acquired his company? He wanted revenge. That's why you had that child. It was because he... assaulted you?"
"He never touched me." Seraphina turned her head to look him straight in the eyes. "The only one who just assaulted me was you."
He let out a dark laugh. "Are you going to press charges?"
"I'd love to, but I'd rather just get a divorce."
"Never." Pierce ground his teeth, grabbing her hand and pinning it flat against his chest. "Absolutely never."
She yanked hard, trying to rip her hand free. "Are you sick in the head?! Do you seriously love wearing a green hat that much?!"
Pierce felt terrifyingly calm. "I will handle all those men. No one will ever know about those disgusting, painful memories. Let's just bury all that trauma and start over..."
Her heart exploded with panic and rage at his words.
She fought wildly to sit up, shoving hard against his arms. "I don't want to start over! I just want to be free of you! Let me go!"
