Watching all this unfold, Alaric grew more and more anxious.
Felicity's threat was still ringing in his ears, lighting a fire of panic in his chest.
He interjected urgently, "Seraphina, you really should have some of this chicken soup. Drink it while it's hot, or it'll lose its medicinal properties."
Elara nodded in agreement. "He's right. Have some. It's incredibly nourishing, and you've been through so much lately. You need to build your strength back up."
Sienna chimed in too. "Drink it, drink it! I wanted some, but Mom said it was made specifically for you."
The three of them continued to coax her, but Seraphina's gaze simply drifted back to Alaric.
His eyes were still darting around, refusing to meet hers. His fingers gripped the hem of his shirt tightly, and his face was a portrait of guilt. He was practically radiating suspicion.
The doubt in Seraphina's eyes deepened. She slowly shook her head, her tone flat but laced with distance. "No thanks, Alaric. I haven't had much of an appetite lately, and I prefer something light. We shouldn't let this soup go to waste... why don't you drink it?"
Alaric's face flushed with awkwardness. He stood there, completely at a loss for words, his panic intensifying. Terrified that she had seen through him, his palms slicked with cold sweat.
Noticing her father's discomfort, Sienna stood up with a laugh. "Dad, it's fine! If she doesn't want it, I'll drink it. I've been craving it ever since I smelled it cooking."
She reached out, ready to grab the bowl from the table.
"Don't drink that!" Alaric screamed, his face draining of color. In a blind panic, he lunged forward to stop her, but he was too late—Sienna's hand had already grazed the bowl.
In his desperate rush, his foot caught on the rug, and he pitched forward, crashing heavily into the coffee table. With a loud crash, the bowl shattered on the floor, sending scalding hot soup splashing all over Sienna's legs.
