The director paused in surprise. "Looking for Dr. Somerset? Do you two... know each other?"
Pierce said, "We do."
Seraphina countered, "But we aren't close."
The director smacked his forehead. "Right, right, I remember now! My memory is slipping. You and Seraphina went to the same school. Well, I'll leave you two to catch up. I have a meeting in the inpatient ward."
The director slipped out.
Seraphina prepared to leave as well.
As she walked past Pierce, he grabbed her wrist.
Seraphina yanked her arm away violently. "State your business, Mr. Prescott. If you keep harassing hospital staff, I'll call security."
She had pulled away with so much force that when Pierce let go, the back of her hand slammed hard against the heavy metal door handle.
A dull thud echoed through the room.
Pierce's expression instantly changed. He grabbed her hand again, turning it over anxiously. "Where did you hit it?"
Seraphina tried to wrench her hand back again.
This time, Pierce refused to let go. "Talk to me!"
Seraphina looked up at him, her eyes red, a sheen of tears forming in them.
She rarely cried. They had known each other for over a decade, and aside from the day Lyra had spread those vile rumors about her, Pierce had almost never seen her cry.
She hadn't even cried for herself back then. The rumors had somehow reached her stepdad's superiors. Because her stepdad worked a secure government job, a scandal of that nature was taken very seriously—especially since the rumor involved his own stepdaughter.
Unable to withstand the pressure, her stepdad had been forced out of his position and transferred to the South, his promising career completely derailed.
Her mother had moved South with him. From that day on, Seraphina was entirely alone, living under her aunt's roof, dependent on others for survival.
"Does it really hurt that much?" He pulled out the inner cuff of his dress shirt, reaching up to wipe her tears.
But Seraphina turned her face away, fighting hard to blink the tears back. She forced her voice to sound as normal as possible. "I'm not crying."
"Your eyes are red."
"It hurts. It's just a physiological reaction." Her voice was slightly hoarse. "Did you come to finalize the divorce? Are you in a hurry?"
Pierce felt a sudden wave of exhaustion. "Can't I look for you for any other reason?"
