He Finally Noticed Me Right When I Was Leaving novel Chapter 39

Memories flashed violently in her mind.

The thieves. The robbers. And that one night—the man sitting on the edge of her bed in complete silence, watching her pretend to sleep.

He had known she was faking.

Because she couldn't stop shaking. The entire bed was rattling with her terror.

She had wrapped herself tightly in the heavy duvet, sweating profusely, yet still feeling ice-cold to her core.

When the man reached out and traced his fingers against her cheek, Seraphina had clamped her teeth down so hard her jaw ached, just to stop herself from sobbing out loud.

When he finally grabbed the blankets and tore them away, her despair peaked.

That night had left her with permanent psychological trauma. Since then, she had to sleep with the lights on, keeping a scalpel securely tucked beneath her pillow.

But tonight, it wasn't just one man. It was twenty or thirty of them.

Seraphina could practically hear her own heartbeat hammering against her ribs.

The footsteps drew nearer. Even with a loaded gun in her hands, she couldn't stop the tremors racking her body.

Her face was pale, but she forcibly commanded herself to focus.

Scanning the room, she realized it was entirely empty. No furniture, save for a cheap folding cot.

The floor was littered with cigarette butts and dark green beer bottles rolling out from beneath the bed.

Gritting her teeth, Seraphina dropped to her knees, grabbed two of the bottles, and smashed them brutally against the floor. The glass shattered, leaving her clutching the jagged necks of the bottles.

The edges were dangerously sharp.

Without hesitating, she dragged one of the broken edges deep across her own calf. Blood immediately poured out, soaking her pant leg.

The sharp, piercing pain instantly cleared the panic from her mind. She wildly tangled her own hair to obscure her face, then swiped her hand through the fresh blood on her leg, smearing the crimson entirely over her face and arms.
