The reason she had refused was because of Pierce. Back then, he had said, "Sera, Metropolitan General is close to my office. If you work there, I can drop you off and pick you up on my way, and we can even grab lunch together."
Seraphina had reasoned with him, "I don't need you to chauffeur me. Doctors don't have fixed hours. If a patient crashes, I have to rush in immediately. I'm basically always on call."
"Which is exactly why you need to be closer to me. I can't help you save lives, but the least I can do is bring you dinner. Dr. Somerset, you can't neglect your own health while saving everyone else. Living off stale bread isn't going to cut it; you need hot meals."
Seraphina had thought about it and realized he had a point.
At the time, they had been busy planning their wedding.
Doctors were notoriously busy, leaving very little time for their partners. Though Pierce occasionally grumbled about it, he fully supported her ambition and career.
But Seraphina always carried a lingering sense of guilt.
If working at Metropolitan General meant carving out a few extra hours a week to spend with him, it seemed like the perfect compromise.
So, no matter how many times the director of State Medical Center had called to recruit her, she politely declined every single offer.
She just hadn't expected the director to complain about it for three solid years, to the point where even the pediatricians knew the story.
Not far down the corridor, a tall, striking figure paused, catching sight of the man and woman chatting near the nurses' station.
Following his gaze, Lyra let out a dramatic gasp, covering her mouth with her hand. "Oh my god, isn't that Seraphina?!"
It was definitely Seraphina.
She was out of uniform, wearing casual clothes instead of her white coat.
Lyra feigned innocence as she murmured, "That guy next to her... Do you think Seraphina transferred all the way to State Medical Center just for him?"
She looked up, studying Pierce's face.
He suffered from chronic stomach issues. After eating some bad seafood a couple of days ago, his stomach had flared up in agonizing pain tonight.
They had originally gone to Metropolitan General and even checked in. But when the hospital director there casually mentioned that Seraphina had transferred to State Medical Center to 'be with someone she knew,' Pierce's demeanor had changed.
