Lyra hesitated for a moment before pushing the passenger door shut and slipping into the back seat.
Honestly, sitting in the back made zero difference. Pierce smoked like a chimney, and within minutes, the entire cabin reeked of heavy tobacco.
Lyra discretely studied his expression through the rearview mirror.
Pierce's face was a mask of cold hostility, his presence overwhelmingly oppressive. Though he didn't say a word, just endlessly dragging on his cigarette, the violent tension practically rolling off him was impossible to ignore.
Lyra spoke softly, "I can't believe Dr. Somerset has a baby. I really didn't see that coming."
She had always assumed Seraphina had spent these past years waiting for Pierce.
And clearly, Pierce had assumed the same.
Witnessing that scene just now was a brutal, point-blank strike to his ego.
It turned out she didn't need him after all.
He had only been gone for three years. A full-term pregnancy took nearly a year. That meant within two years of him leaving, she had already gotten pregnant with another man's child.
Factor in the time needed to meet someone, date, and fall in love before having a baby... the timeline was damning.
Pierce let out a dark, self-deprecating laugh. "She always did have nerve."
Lyra added, "I always thought Dr. Somerset was so principled, someone who respected herself. I mean, at the very least, shouldn't she have waited until the divorce papers were signed? Having a baby while technically still married... she totally made a fool of you..."
As she spoke, she kept her eyes glued to the rearview mirror, tracking Pierce's reaction.
She had fully expected the comment to send him into a blinding rage, but there was no anger on his face.
Instead, he looked desolate.
He looked like a dominant alpha who had lost a vicious territorial dispute—battered, broken, and completely hollowed out.
A long silence stretched before he finally spoke. "I'll call a cab to take you home."
Lyra instantly knew something was wrong. "You're not coming home?"
Pierce frowned in irritation and turned the key in the ignition. "I have things to handle at the office."
