That had happened two long years ago.
But the memory of it felt as raw as yesterday.
"Dr. Somerset? Are you okay? You look pale as a ghost."
The nurse's voice snapped Seraphina back to reality. She shook her head. "I'm fine. It's probably just the lack of sleep."
The nurse looked sympathetic. "You really need to go home and get some rest. I know it hurts to see your baby sick, but you have to take care of yourself too."
Seraphina found Dr. Lowell to clear the discharge.
After getting his approval, she carried the baby back to Caspian's villa.
The front door was unlocked. The living room floor was empty, save for a massive, dried puddle of dark brown blood.
The entire house still reeked heavily of copper and violence.
Seraphina gently laid the infant on the sofa and set down the medication Dr. Lowell had prescribed.
She left a sticky note beside it, clearly detailing the dosage and schedule.
As if sensing the loss of warmth from Seraphina's arms, the baby's little lips began to tremble, and she let out a soft, miserable whimper that quickly escalated into a cry.
"You actually came back."
Seraphina snapped her head around, spotting a figure slumped in the shadows of the corner.
It was Caspian. He was still a complete bloody mess, his features obscured entirely by dried gore. The only discernible thing was his eyes, locked onto her with cold intensity.
"You're hard to kill," Seraphina stated.
Caspian scoffed. "Right back at you. I'm hard to kill, and you've got the devil's own luck."
Seraphina had absolutely no desire to converse with him. Her tone was completely detached. "I took the baby to the hospital last night. She contracted pneumonia. They put her on an IV all night, but she's too young to stay on it. I wrote down the dosage instructions for these meds. Just mix them into her formula and feed her. I'm leaving."
As if the baby understood her words, her cries suddenly spiked, transforming into a desperate, heartbreaking wail that tore at the conscience.
Seraphina walked briskly to the front door, her hand resting heavily on the doorknob.
Caspian suddenly let out a pained groan, calling after her. "Wait. Don't go yet..."
