Seraphina grew suspicious. "Is this your baby?"
"She's not mine," Caspian said, a flash of pain crossing his face. "She belongs to one of my workers."
"Where is he?"
"He jumped off a building. Died on impact."
Seraphina drew in a sharp breath.
"He just bought a house and had a mortgage. When the paychecks stopped, he couldn't make the payments, and the bank foreclosed. Right after that, his wife fell severely ill and needed massive medical bills. The pressure broke him. He left the baby on my doorstep and jumped."
"...When did this happen?"
"Yesterday."
Yesterday.
Yesterday, Pierce was out dining with Lyra at an exclusive restaurant.
Frustrated, Caspian ran a hand through his hair, turning it into a chaotic mess. "The baby cried all night. I had no idea what to do, so I stayed up with her. Thank God you showed up tonight, or I wouldn't have known how to survive moving forward."
He let out a dark chuckle. "Having Pierce Prescott's wife come to my house to help me babysit. I'm truly honored."
"I never thought I'd find myself working for the man who nearly killed me."
"You need money that badly?"
Seraphina nodded without hiding it. "Yes. There was an emergency in my family."
"Pierce doesn't give you a dime?" Caspian asked. "You're still his wife on paper, and it's not like he's short on cash."
Seraphina kept her tone neutral. "It's his money. He can do whatever he wants with it."
Caspian couldn't help but mock the situation. "Other women get a life out of marriage. You got absolutely nothing."
Guarding an empty mansion by herself for three years was an incredibly lonely existence.
Seraphina had already come to terms with it. She considered herself married to her memories.
