On the drive back, Seraphina kept her head turned toward the window.
She had tested the passenger door handle, but he had engaged the child lock. Her eyes then drifted toward the rear doors.
"Don't bother. They're all locked," Pierce warned. "Besides, there's heavy traffic on the main road. If you jump out now, you'll get run over."
Seraphina didn't shift her position, merely retracting her gaze to blankly watch the trees whizzing past outside.
Pierce let out a heavy sigh and continued driving.
The car didn't stop until they reached the front gates of his villa.
Pierce killed the engine but made no move to get out.
Seraphina remained utterly silent, and the two of them sat trapped in a suffocating stalemate inside the dark cabin.
After what felt like an eternity, Pierce finally broke the silence. "Why didn't you pick up the phone?"
"I handed over everything I was supposed to. There's nothing left for us to talk about."
"Handed over?" Pierce let out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "You tossed a few utility cards at me and you call that a handover? What do you think this is, a corporate resignation?"
Seraphina finally looked at him. She glanced at the villa she had lived in for three years and gave a blunt, two-word answer. "An asylum."
Pierce froze. "What did you just say?"
"You heard exactly what I said."
Pierce stared at her, taking a slow, deep breath. "Are you calling me a lunatic?"
"I was talking about myself."
Seraphina returned to staring out the window, even though there was nothing outside but pitch-black darkness, an isolated streetlight, and an endless sea of manicured shrubs.
When she was a little girl reading fairy tales, she always read about the princess being kidnapped by a dragon and trapped in a castle surrounded by a dense forest of thorns.
It was the prince who wielded a gleaming sword, hacking through the briars to save her.
Over the past three years, every time Seraphina returned from work and saw the towering hedges outside this villa, she felt entirely detached from reality. The man who trapped her here was him. Her supposed prince was the dragon all along. So who was going to save her?
No one.
