Seraphina and Lana took the staff elevator.
Hospital elevators were notoriously overcrowded; there were never enough of them to go around.
To save time, the hospital had a dedicated elevator for medical staff that could only be operated by swiping an employee badge.
Lana supported Seraphina as they stepped inside and pressed the button for the 5th floor.
The 5th floor was the surgical department.
Seraphina murmured softly, "Let's just go to your office. You can patch me up there."
Lana looked hesitant. "Are you sure we shouldn't have the surgeons take a look at you? We really should make sure you don't have any internal injuries."
"I know my own body, Lana. Listen to me."
Lana bit her lip, eventually caving to her mentor's orders and hitting the button for the 16th floor instead.
Lana actually knew quite a bit about Seraphina's private life.
This mythical husband of hers, who had been missing for three years only to suddenly pop up out of nowhere, definitely meant some serious drama had gone down.
If her mentor wanted to keep a low profile and avoid a scene, Lana was fully prepared to respect her wishes.
Lana went to the nurse's station to grab antiseptic and cotton swabs, then crouched at Seraphina's feet to tend to her battered elbows.
There wasn't actually that much bleeding. The worst part was that the entire joint had swollen up to the size of a baseball. It was completely purple and bruised, filled with severe fluid buildup. When Lana gently pressed a cotton swab against it, the area felt dangerously soft.
The more Lana looked at it, the more her heart ached. "Dr. Somerset, what exactly did your scumbag ex-husband do to you? How did your arms end up looking like this?"
Suddenly, Lana's face turned pale as she gasped. "Wait, is he in the mafia?"
Seraphina sat with her eyes closed. When her adrenaline was pumping and she was violently smashing the car window, she hadn't felt a thing. Now that the adrenaline had worn off, the agonizing pain in both her elbows was searing through her nerves.
Her voice was weak and hollow. "No, he's not."
Lana leaned in closer. "Are you sure?"
"Why would you think he's in the mafia?"
She thought Lana was going to accuse him of domestic violence.
