"You awake? I thought you passed out again."
Caspian said coldly, "You just wanted to slap me."
"I admit I had a bit of a selfish motive. You stabbed me, so slapping you a few times was letting you off easy. But I also did it for medical reasons. You lost a lot of blood. If you slipped into a coma again, your heart might have stopped."
Caspian immediately sobered up. "Seriously?"
He forced himself to stay awake, even pinching his arm hard. The sharp sting cleared his mind, and a wave of relief washed over him.
"No," Seraphina said. "I lied."
Caspian erupted. "You played me?!"
Seraphina was already on her feet, wiping the blood from her hands with a paper towel. "You stabbed me, so I got my revenge. Got a problem with that?"
Caspian let out a dark laugh. "You vicious woman."
"Thanks for the compliment. I recently learned that acting a little crazy is the fastest way to solve problems."
"You lunatic. No wonder Pierce doesn't want you!"
"Is being wanted by him some kind of grand honor? Is it better than winning a Nobel Prize?" Seraphina coldly tossed the bloody tissue into the trash. "I'm the one who doesn't want him."
She turned to leave.
Caspian asked anxiously, "Where are you going?"
Seraphina paused and glanced over her shoulder. "To work."
