"Mom! Seraphina! I got so much stuff!" Sienna beamed. "I got radishes for mom, bamboo shoots for Seraphina, and I even grabbed some beer for dad! With all the food mom is going to cook tonight, he's definitely going to want a drink!"
Seeing her cousin's genuine excitement when mentioning Alaric left Seraphina feeling a heavy knot in her chest.
Sienna licked her lips, noticing the tension. "What were you two talking about? Seraphina, why are you crying?"
She dropped the grocery bags on the ground, her expression turning fierce. "Did that manipulative bitch start drama again? And what was up with you asking for money today? Is she making Pierce force you to pay up? I knew it! She looks like trash, she acts like trash!"
"No, it's not that," Seraphina said softly. "I just got a little car sick on the way over and felt nauseous. She can't bully me anymore."
"Car sick? But Silas drives so smoothly!" Speaking of Silas, Sienna's mood instantly brightened. "Seraphina, Silas is so amazing. He's even helping me find a job! I'll finally be able to make my own money. If I budget right, I could save up thousands of dollars a year!"
Elara looked at her daughter, her eyes brimming with pride.
She turned to Seraphina. "Once Sienna's job is sorted out, invite Silas over for dinner. We need to thank him properly."
"I'll just treat him to a meal myself. Elara, Sienna, you two head upstairs. I need to get going."
Sienna gasped in surprise. "You're not staying for dinner?!"
She genuinely wanted Seraphina to stay and enjoy Elara's cooking.
But Seraphina was too worried about the vulnerable household over at Caspian's place.
She had only bandaged Caspian's wounds the night before, and she had no idea if he had even woken up yet. If he was still unconscious, he needed to be at the hospital immediately.
And then there was little Skylar. The baby had probably gone hungry all day. It broke her heart thinking about such a tiny child starving.
The anxiety was gnawing at her.
"I have some urgent things to take care of. Next time, I promise."
"How are you getting there?" Elara asked. "Are you taking a cab? What if you get sick again?"
"It's not far. I'll walk."
The straight-line distance from the apartment to Caspian's villa was just over a mile.
