"Your sweet Sylvia did a lot more than just this tonight," Scarlett continued. "Oh, wait, what did you say earlier? That she wouldn't even hurt a fly, let alone commit arson?"
Yardley's voice was hoarse, his confidence shattering as his legs went numb. "Scarlett... could this all be a misunderstanding?"
He still couldn't process it. The video completely obliterated his entire perception of Sylvia and Gwen. He needed time to digest it.
Scarlett sneered, her icy smile deepening. "A misunderstanding? Wow, the filter you have for her is thick. Well, hold your breath. I have all the evidence proving who set the fire at La Belle Nuit tonight. I can just hand it over to the police. They'll tell us if it's a 'misunderstanding' or premeditated arson."
Her absolute certainty made Yardley realize the gravity of the situation. "Wait! Just hold on. Don't do anything yet. I'm coming over right now."
He hung up and sprinted downstairs.
He had taken the call in the hallway, and Corinne had been eavesdropping through a crack in her door. The news of La Belle Nuit catching fire had thrilled her so much she hadn't been able to sleep. But hearing Scarlett's threats, she realized things were spiraling out of control and rushed out.
"Where are you going at this hour?" Corinne asked, grabbing her coat and following him downstairs, feigning ignorance.
Yardley didn't even look back. "I have to step out. It's an emergency."
Corinne hurried after him. "Wait, I'm coming with you. That was Scarlett on the phone, wasn't it? Is she targeting Sylvia again? This is ridiculous!"
