He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 918

After all, Scarlett only had Jacqueline.

But this time, Yardley had spared no expense.

For the entire drive, Veronica had not stopped talking about the grand welcome the Croft family was throwing for Scarlett. She had seen all the lavish gifts and decorations plastered across social media.

Scarlett and Julian hadn't posted a single thing, but the younger relatives in the Croft family couldn't resist bragging online. Word spread like wildfire, and soon all of Bay City knew how adored Scarlett was by her new in-laws. Veronica, obsessively refreshing her feed, had seen it all.

She had complained and whined about it so relentlessly on the drive that Yardley's temples were throbbing. He bought the trunk full of expensive gifts partially so he wouldn't look bad compared to Julian, but mostly just to shut Veronica up.

As he stepped through the doors of the Thorne residence, a heavy unease settled over him.

The Thorne family knew they had just gotten their marriage license, yet there was absolutely no joy in the air.

The massive house was dead quiet.

Walking into the dining room, Yardley saw a massive dining table set with nothing but a few bland, vegetarian side dishes.

Quentin Thorne sat at the head of the table, his face devoid of any celebratory warmth. Beside him, Veronica's mother sat stiffly, looking as cold and unwelcoming as a marble statue.

"Mom, Dad, we're back!" Veronica called out cheerfully, rushing over to hug her parents.

Yardley followed closely behind, his eyes darting between Quentin and his wife.

He immediately sensed a drastic shift in the atmosphere. When they were just business partners, Quentin had been warm and accommodating. Now, the man was radiating an icy, condescending superiority that made Yardley's stomach knot.

They had just signed the papers, but Yardley couldn't bring himself to call them 'Mom and Dad.' He settled for a polite nod, standing stiffly by the table.

"I know today was rushed, but I brought some gifts for the two of you," Yardley finally said, breaking the suffocating silence.

"I'll be blunt, Yardley. Veronica was impulsive. She insisted on signing the papers with you, and we couldn't stop her. But that doesn't mean the Thorne family accepts you as our son-in-law."

"Your company is rotting from the inside out. You are hemorrhaging money. You need Thorne Industries to keep you alive. We are not the ones marrying up; you are."

"Since the papers are signed, I am willing to bail out Flynn Group. But Thorne money is never given away for free."

The air in the room grew suffocatingly dense.

Yardley's throat went dry, a horrible sense of dread creeping into his chest.

Before he could say a word, Quentin pulled a thick document from his jacket and slid it across the table.

"This is a prenuptial agreement. Read it over. If you don't have any issues with it... sign it."
