He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 916

The reporters eventually dispersed, leaving Veronica standing there like a defeated, miserable hen. She was about to storm off to her car when she turned and saw Yardley.

He was standing frozen in place, his broad shoulders and sharp jawline striking even in his misery. Despite everything, her heart gave a little flutter. Physically, Yardley Flynn was exactly her type.

With only one final step left to officially lock him down, she refused to walk away empty-handed.

She marched up to him, lifting her chin arrogantly. "Well, Yardley? What's it going to be? Are we getting this license or not?"

"This is the last time I'm offering. Make up your mind, because after today—"

"Let's do it."

Yardley's voice was grim. He grabbed her arm and marched straight back into City Hall. He was operating on pure desperation, treating Veronica as the last available lifeboat on a sinking ship.

Half an hour later, they walked out the doors, each clutching a marriage license.

Veronica looked smug and triumphant. Yardley's eyes were dead and hollow. He looked less like a groom and more like a man walking to his own execution.

Veronica leaned into his shoulder, her voice sickly sweet. "Yardley, come over to my house for dinner tonight."

"I just sent a picture of the license to my dad. He told us to come over. He wants to talk to us."

Yardley kept his face blank. "Fine."

She poked his arm playfully. "We're officially married now. Tonight... you should stay over. Don't go back to your place."

Yardley caught a glimpse of her red, swollen, blistered face out of the corner of his eye and felt a wave of nausea.
