It only took a few agonizing seconds for Yardley to realize he had lost.
He opened his mouth to speak, but it felt as though a block of cement was sitting on his chest. No sound came out. The bitter truth was that his mother and her friends had crossed the line all those years ago. They had been too cruel, leaving no room for mercy. And now, with the State Director personally overseeing the case, Yardley's money and influence were utterly useless. He had no choice but to surrender.
He took a breath, ready to give up the passcode.
But Corinne, sensing the walls closing in, suddenly grabbed her chest. "Oh... oh no," she gasped, her voice trembling. "My heart... it hurts. I can't breathe..."
Her eyes rolled back into her head. She collapsed to the floor, foaming at the mouth, her limbs twitching in a wildly exaggerated display of a seizure. "Officers... Jacqueline Langley beat me... she hit me with that mop... I'm dying..."
The pathetic performance brought the interrogation to a screeching halt.
Gunnar frowned, waving a hand at two nearby officers. "Call an ambulance and get her out of here."
Seeing an opening, Yardley immediately stepped between Gunnar and his mother. "Director Stetson, my mother is having a heart attack! This is a matter of life and death. I need to take her to the hospital immediately. The phone will have to wait!"
He lunged forward to snatch the phone back.
Gunnar shot him a glare so lethal it froze Yardley in his tracks. Chilled to the bone, he slowly pulled his hand back. He turned a venomous look toward Scarlett and her mother. "If anything happens to my mother tonight, the Flynn family will destroy you."
Before the threat could even settle in the air, Jacqueline moved.
She stared down at Corinne, who was supposedly having a near-death medical emergency while subtly peeking through half-closed eyelids to check if her act was working. Jacqueline let out a dark, mocking laugh.
Gunnar turned his cold gaze back to Yardley. "Do you have anything else you'd like to add?"
"My time is valuable. I suggest you cooperate with this investigation immediately, or I will start holding you personally accountable for obstruction."
Sweat poured down Yardley's face. Both he and his mother were rapidly losing color, looking utterly defeated.
Panic fully set in for Corinne. She grabbed Yardley's arm, her perfectly manicured nails digging into his suit jacket. "Yardley... you're all I have... son..."
Yardley's heart pounded violently against his ribs. He slowly lifted his head to look at the Director, his voice tight and resigned.
"Fine. Give me the phone. I'll unlock it."
