"Divorce?" Veronica scoffed as if it were the funniest joke she’d heard all year. She stared at Corinne with pure contempt.
"Get your facts straight, you delusional old hag. Your precious son practically begged me to sign that marriage license. I didn't force his hand." She crossed her arms, exuding total dominance. "Let's be honest. Given the absolute state of the Flynn family’s finances, if I didn't still have a soft spot for him, I never would have agreed to this. The Flynns desperately climbed the social ladder to get the Thornes. You'd better remember that."
"If you behave yourself and keep me happy, maybe I’ll be in a good enough mood to use my connections and pull your two precious daughters out of jail. But if you keep forgetting your place and annoying me, Clarissa and Melanie can rot in their cells for the rest of their miserable lives."
Veronica delivered the threat with venomous clarity, her eyes flashing with malice.
Corinne swayed where she lay on the floor. The reality of the situation came crashing down on her, bringing a tidal wave of regret. When Veronica had bailed her out of lockup, she had played the part of the perfect, respectful angel. The moment the ink was dry on the marriage license, she shed her mask and revealed herself to be a ruthless tyrant.
But Corinne was trapped. All of the Flynn family’s favors had been cashed in, their network burned. Clarissa and Melanie were still behind bars, and Veronica was their only lifeline.
If her daughters were to ever see the light of day, Corinne had to submit. She had to swallow her pride and endure whatever abuse Veronica dished out. Once the girls were free, then she could fight back. But for now, she was entirely at the younger woman's mercy.
