He had reduced his expectations to the absolute bare minimum; right now, simply getting to see Scarlett’s face would be enough.
Gripping the phone, Yardley waited in agonizing silence for her reply.
Instead of Scarlett, it was Julian’s steady, authoritative voice that came through the line. "If this is strictly a business meeting, I’ll accompany my wife to Flynn Group."
The sound of Julian’s voice snapped Yardley out of his depressing reverie. His expression instantly soured. "Julian, don't you think you're being a little paranoid? I’m meeting Scarlett for business. Why do you need to tag along? Are you really that insecure?"
Julian’s tone remained unshaken. "If it were anyone else, no. But with you? Absolutely."
He paused slightly before adding, "Scarlett is my wife now. I am not taking even a fraction of a risk. Unlike you, I don't take things for granted. I’m very protective of what’s mine. If my wife is meeting my rival—whether for business or personal reasons—she stays entirely within my line of sight."
Yardley choked on his own breath, completely humiliated.
His face darkened as his fingers dug into the phone. "I never guarded her like this when we were together. If I had, you and Scarlett would never have ended up together."
"Your negligence is exactly what taught me to cherish her," Julian countered smoothly. "Is that a problem for you?"
