Her mother's voice broke into a terrified sob.
"I know, Mom. I'm on my way."
The moment she hung up, the color drained entirely from Scarlett's face.
Ignoring Yardley completely, she shoved past his shoulder and sprinted out the door in a blind panic.
He had heard enough through the phone's speaker to understand what was happening.
Seeing her sheer terror and knowing his own daughter was being rushed to the hospital with a high fever, he immediately chased after her.
Just as she yanked open the driver's side door and slid in, he lunged forward, tore open the passenger door, and forced his way inside.
She froze. "What the hell are you doing?"
"My daughter has a fever. I'm going," he demanded, his voice tight.
The veins in her forehead throbbed. "Now is not the time for your nonsense! Get out of the car!"
He buckled his seatbelt, immovable. "I am not getting out! My daughter is sick, and I need to be there!"
"..."
It was an emergency, and she didn't have a single second to waste on a pointless argument.
Closing her eyes, she took a sharp breath, shoved down her revulsion, and slammed her foot on the gas.
The car shot forward like a bullet.
They tore through the streets, screeching to a halt outside the emergency room.
Scarlett practically flew out of the car, sprinting over to grab Jacqueline's shoulders.
"Mom, how is she? Is she okay?"
Jacqueline was pacing frantically outside the doors. Spotting her daughter, she grabbed her hands like a lifeline.
"She spiked a sudden fever this afternoon! I gave her medicine twice, but it keeps shooting back up!"
