Gordon paused, instantly realizing exactly why Sylvia was here.
She wasn't here to check on him; she was here to plant a seed of doubt.
He had found it bizarre that she even showed up. She was notoriously selfish—always taking what others offered but never giving anything in return. The fact that she rushed over to see him after the crash was highly suspicious.
Slipping his hand beneath the blanket, Gordon quietly hit 'record' on his phone. He kept his voice flat.
"Why would you say that?"
"I highly doubt it. Even if Scarlett and Julian made enemies, why would anyone target me?"
Sylvia let out a soft, mocking laugh.
"Honestly, Gordon, you're way too naive."
"Think about it. You crashed in a busy downtown area. Traffic is usually bad, so everyone drives slowly. Why would a driver in a near-totaled truck with failing brakes be speeding through that exact intersection?"
"Whether you believe it or not, I have a reliable source that says this crash was premeditated. The target wasn't you—it was a message for Scarlett and Julian!"
"Gordon, you, Yardley, Harbour, and I used to be so close. You guys always treated me like a little sister. I genuinely don't want you getting dragged into Scarlett and Julian's mess. You need to keep your distance. Look at you—you're completely innocent, yet you're the one suffering."
Having sent the nurse away, Sylvia laid out her narrative perfectly.
Ever since her release from custody, Sylvia had cooled down. She realized her old tactics against Scarlett and Julian were useless and often backfired.
