The immense shock and fury caused a massive spike in Corinne's blood pressure. She gasped for air, her face completely draining of color, and passed out cold on the spot for the second time.
Yardley panicked and rushed forward, but Melanie shoved him away violently.
"Get away from her! You spineless coward! You're no brother of mine! Move!"
"Clarissa, Catherine, Sylvia, we need to get Mom to the hospital right now!"
Melanie screamed, her hatred for Scarlett and her utter disappointment in Yardley reaching a fever pitch.
The sisters quickly loaded Corinne into the car, speeding away from Orchard Villa in a cloud of dust.
Realizing things had gone terribly wrong, the two machinery operators immediately called for tow trucks and swiftly cleared their equipment from the property.
Yardley was drained beyond words. He pinched the bridge of his nose forcefully.
"Let's just get this over with. I don't have the energy to deal with this mess anymore, Scarlett. Please, let's just end this."
Scarlett rolled her eyes. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but your family is the one causing all the drama. I've only ever wanted the divorce, Yardley."
Yardley gave her a long, complicated look. "You got everything you wanted. You can't possibly still hate me, can you?"
Scarlett met his gaze calmly, completely unbothered.
"All my love and hate have been converted into cash. I have nothing left to hate you for. This is it for us, Yardley."
Yardley could tell Scarlett was exhausted, too. Both of them had been emotionally drained to their absolute limits.
His desperation to finalize the divorce peaked.
Without exchanging another word, the two of them headed straight through the doors of City Hall.
Standing in front of the same clerk from before, Scarlett and Yardley submitted their respective documents.
The clerk asked a few routine questions, confirmed their mutual intent to divorce once more, and finally pulled out two copies of their divorce decrees, stamping them heavily with the official seal.
Standing at the window, Scarlett watched as the paperwork was officially processed. The tightly wound string in her chest finally snapped loose.
It felt as if a massive boulder had been lifted from her soul.
