"She just divorced you, and now she's openly accepting gifts and flowers from another man! She has absolutely zero respect for you!"
Ever since the ink dried on the divorce papers, Yardley had been trapped in a hazy, surreal state of mind.
Though he had been discussing work with Veronica just moments ago, his mind kept wandering. Scarlett's face kept unbiddenly surfacing in his thoughts.
As Veronica rattled off architectural jargon, all he could hear were the echoes of Scarlett's voice from when they used to debate designs in this very room.
On the surface, he was the picture of stoic calm. But inside, his heart was bleeding out.
The wound from the divorce had been ripped wide open. The dull, constant ache felt like creeping vines, twisting and multiplying in his chest until he thought his heart might literally explode from the pressure.
When Sylvia shoved the phone in his face, his chest seized violently.
He snatched the device, staring at the screen. Once he confirmed the post was indeed from Scarlett's account, his restraint snapped. He hurled the phone against the hardwood floor, smashing it to pieces!
"She's really got nerve!"
"I gave her everything she was entitled to, and this is how she repays me? By publicly humiliating me! It's absolutely unacceptable!"
Yardley's entire demeanor grew erratic, a terrifyingly dark storm brewing in his eyes.
Sylvia stared in shock at her shattered phone on the ground, a pang of dismay hitting her chest.
She stepped forward, instinctively wanting to comfort him. But before she could, Veronica beat her to it, linking her arm firmly through his.
"Yardley, if she's going to treat you like this, you have to hit back harder!"
"There's a major industry banquet tonight. I checked the guest list, and Croft Design Studio is invited!"
"Come with me. We'll dress to the nines, and I'll be on your arm to show everyone exactly where you stand. You need to show Scarlett that she's completely replaceable. What do you say?"
Veronica had been plotting to get Yardley to accompany her to the banquet for days. This presented the perfect opportunity.
The invitation had landed on his desk weeks ago.
