He Lost Me to His Best Friend novel Chapter 75

"Julian!"

Sylvia's eyes snapped open. The moment she realized who had just walked in, she practically vaulted off the sofa, letting out a terrified gasp.

"Julian!" Yardley echoed, equally startled as he instinctively shot to his feet.

Julian Croft stood rooted in the doorway, an immovable force. His piercing gaze swept over the two of them with suffocating pressure.

He spoke, his voice dangerously calm and dripping with ice.

"I thought you were trying to kill yourself? Playing the victim again?"

Sylvia trembled violently. She rushed forward, gazing up at Julian with the desperate, pleading eyes of a kicked puppy.

"Julian, I... I really didn't want to live anymore. I texted you so many times, but you never replied."

"Yardley had to come over and talk me down. If he hadn't... I swear I was going to jump."

Sylvia stared at him pathetically, but Julian kept his eyes fixed straight ahead, utterly unmoved.

Desperate to prove her point, she dug into her bag and shoved a medical certificate toward him.

"The doctor diagnosed me with severe depression. He said I have suicidal tendencies. When my emotions spike, I just can't control myself!"

Julian glanced down at the paper. A flicker of blatant disgust crossed his eyes.

"Are hospitals just handing out depression certificates to anyone now? By this standard, the whole world is clinically depressed."

Sylvia bit her lip, forcing out a choked sob of pure grievance.

"I'm not lying to you! It's the truth... Julian, why do you constantly doubt me? Do I literally have to die for you to believe me?"

Sylvia had always come to him crying about how hard her life was and how victimized she felt. How could this be true?

While Yardley was reeling, Sylvia burst into loud, defensive tears.

"Julian, how can you say that? If you hadn't been so cold to me, why would I have acted out?"

"You're always working! You never have time for me! I'm your wife—shouldn't I be allowed to spend your money? What kind of man doesn't give his paycheck to his wife? It's completely normal!"

"If you aren't spending your money on Caleb and me, who are you saving it for? Do you have another woman?"

Julian closed his eyes, completely stripped of any desire to communicate with her.

In the early days, he would patiently coax her, reason with her, and try to help her grow. But now, he saw her exactly for what she was: an intensely selfish, shallow, and manipulative woman.

He had hit his breaking point long ago. He had drawn up divorce papers last year, but in a stroke of sheer, terrible timing, Sylvia had gotten pregnant.
