Sylvia was frail and completely defenseless. Against Veronica's feral rage, she stood no chance.
Within seconds, she was battered to a pulp, her face bruised and swollen under the relentless assault. She burst into agonizing, pathetic sobs.
"Yardley, help me! It hurts!"
"Yardley, make her stop! She's crazy! Ahhh!"
Sylvia shrieked, her desperate cries echoing across the courtyard.
In the past, Yardley would have rushed in without a second thought to shield her. But today, he just stood there. He was utterly, bone-deep exhausted.
He clenched his fists, staring at the two women rolling around on the ground, brawling like alley cats stripped of any shred of dignity. A profound, suffocating weariness settled over his heart.
He couldn't pinpoint the exact moment his glamorous, privileged life had deteriorated into this trashy spectacle. He didn't know what kind of karmic debt he was paying to be constantly surrounded by such vulgar, exhausting women.
He watched Veronica's face contort with vicious, unchecked aggression. The thought of being legally bound to a woman like this for the rest of his life sent a cold shudder down his spine.
Then he looked at Sylvia, now a sobbing, pathetic mess, and wondered what kind of manipulative monster he had spent so many years protecting.
It was chaos. His entire reality had derailed.
