In the bustling crowd outside City Hall, a man dressed in black, wearing a face mask, raised his camera. His focus was locked entirely on Sylvia Stetson.
Sylvia unscrews the cap of her bottle, her face twisting in pure malice, and hurled the liquid forward. But in her blind rage, she missed her target. The entire contents splashed directly onto Veronica Thorne.
"Ahhh!"
Feeling the sudden shock of liquid splattering across her face, neck, and chest, Veronica let out a blood-curdling scream.
A split second later, a fiery, agonizing burn ignited across her skin.
"Sylvia, what the hell are you doing?!" Yardley Flynn snapped his head around, his eyes blazing with fury as he glared at his cousin.
Sylvia froze, the empty bottle dangling from her trembling hand. She stared blankly at Yardley. When her eyes shifted to Veronica, who was now crouching on the ground, shrieking and clawing at her burning face, Sylvia's mind went completely blank.
What had she just done?
That bottle was carefully prepared for Scarlett Langley. In a moment of reckless impulse, she had thrown it right at Veronica.
"I... I didn't do anything! Yardley, I swear I didn't do anything!" Sylvia stammered in a full-blown panic, dropping the plastic bottle as if it were on fire. She backed away, babbling incoherently, teetering on the edge of a breakdown.
Yardley shot her a look of utter disgust. Ignoring her, he rushed forward and pulled Veronica up from the pavement.
A pungent, eye-watering scent of chili peppers wafted off her clothes.
"Veronica, are you okay?" Yardley asked, trying to pry her hands away from her face to assess the damage.
Taking advantage of his proximity, Veronica threw herself against his chest, sobbing hysterically.
"Yardley, what is wrong with your psychotic cousin?!"
"We're here to get our marriage license! Shouldn't she be congratulating us?"
