After listening quietly, Wynette finally asked, "Mom, when did Dawn move back to Scenaville after she got married?"
From what Kaylee had said, the two of them mostly kept in touch through messages after Dawn got married.
But Dawn's marriage had been a miserable one. After the wedding, she became a full-time housewife. She and Kaylee had originally promised to meet once a year, but Dawn kept canceling because of problems at home.
Kaylee went to see her a few times.
Later, after Wynette was born, Kaylee became busy raising her daughter and did not visit Dawn again for a long time.
Then one day, Dawn suddenly showed up in Scenaville looking for Kaylee. She was covered in injuries and told Kaylee she had divorced her husband.
Kaylee finally learned what Dawn had been going through. Dawn's ex-husband was a violent drunk. Every time he drank, he would lose control and hit her. She had been pregnant several times, but each pregnancy ended in miscarriage because of the abuse.
At first, Dawn wanted a divorce. But her husband cried, begged, and swore he would change. A few months later, he started abusing her again. Eventually, he even threatened to kill her entire family if she left him.
Instead of helping her, her family kept telling her to endure it.
The final time, Dawn was seven months pregnant when he beat her so badly that she lost the baby. The miscarriage caused a serious infection, and doctors had to remove her uterus. From then on, she could never have children again.
Dawn broke down. She fought her husband like a madwoman, pressed a knife to his throat, and forced him to sign the divorce papers.
After the divorce, she spent some time recovering before coming to Scenaville to stay with Kaylee.
Kaylee pitied her deeply. She let Dawn live for free in one of her condominiums and even asked Ryker to help her find a decent job.
Kaylee truly did everything she could for her friend. What she never expected was for Dawn to stab her in the back.
Later, Kaylee found out that when Dawn's ex-husband came to Scenaville and tried to strangle her, it was Dawn who had given him her address. She even told him that Kaylee was the one who pushed her to get divorced.
In reality, Kaylee had known nothing about Dawn's marriage at the time.
If Wynette hadn't brought it up today, Kaylee never would have talked about those old memories again.
Clenching her teeth, Kaylee said bitterly, "I treated her too well. She was always jealous that I married your dad. She thought I didn't deserve to live better than her. I was blind when it came to people."
Then she looked at Wynette in confusion. "Why are you suddenly asking about her?"
Kaylee had avoided talking about Dawn for years. Every time she thought about her, all she felt was anger and resentment.
Wynette didn't tell her about the things she had recently discovered. Kaylee was too fragile to handle that.
Instead, Wynette smiled lightly and said, "Nothing. I was just curious. Aren't we supposed to visit Dad? I'll go with you."
Kaylee quickly snapped out of it. "Oh, right. We still need to see Ryker."
When the two arrived at the treatment center, they happened to run into Justin, who had come to visit.
Since Wynette had already warned the staff beforehand, anyone outside the family would be turned away.
After finding out everything Justin had done, Kaylee had deleted and blocked all contact with his family.
The moment she saw him, her expression turned guarded. "What bring you here?"
Justin smiled politely. "Kaylee, I came to visit Ryker."
Kaylee pulled a long face. She was about to tell him to leave.
Wynette turned to look at her and softly interrupted, "Mom, go inside first. The soup's getting cold. Dad won't be able to drink it later."
Kaylee immediately understood what she meant. Wynette did not want her involved.
She held back her anger, shot Justin a hard glare, and turned to leave.
