He Loves Me Right, Finally novel Chapter 135

"Betty, did they change my dad's medication?" Wynette asked the nurse.

Betty Cook had been taking care of Ryker ever since he moved into the center. Since she was much older than Wynette, she always treated her with respect.

Betty smiled and replied, "Yeah. Mr. Jewell's been doing rehab lately, so Dr. Day adjusted his prescription."

She turned to Ryker and reminded him gently, "Mr. Jewell, don't forget to take your medicine. I'll step outside now and give you some privacy."

Just as Kaylee reached for the pills to help Ryker take them, Wynette stopped her.

She picked up the medicine and said quietly, "Dad, don't take these for now. Just drink some water. If Betty asks later, tell her you already took them."

Kaylee's expression changed instantly. "Wynette, is something wrong with the medicine?"

Wynette gave her a calm look. "I just feel like something doesn't add up. If Dr. Day really changed the prescription, why didn't he mention it last night when he updated me on Dad's condition?"

The more she thought about it, the stranger it felt.

Nelson Day had changed Ryker's medication a few times before, but every time, he informed Wynette first and even sent her the names of the drugs. This was the only time he had not said a word. That wasn't normal.

Wynette crouched beside Ryker and asked softly, "Dad, how long have you been taking this medicine?"

Ryker thought for a moment before raising three fingers. Talking was still hard for him, and unless he absolutely had to speak, he preferred using gestures instead. For simple conversations like this, he usually stayed quiet.

Wynette looked at him gently and said, "Just stop taking it for now."

Ryker nodded without hesitation.

Kaylee looked more and more uneasy. "Maybe we should just bring you home."

Usually she could stay calm, but the serious look on Wynette's face made her nervous.

Kaylee's eyes slowly turn red. Wynette quickly reassured her. "It's okay. I'm just going to talk to Dr. Day."

She went to Nelson's office. Luckily, he happened to be there.

"Dr. Day," Wynette greeted him.

"Ms. Jewell." Nelson immediately stood up to welcome her.

As usual, Wynette first asked about Ryker's condition. Nelson's answers sounded no different from before. After a while, she finally brings up her real question.

"Dr. Day, my mother's been alone at home worrying about my father. I wonder, would it be okay for us to bring him home and take care of him ourselves?"

"Of course," Nelson answered with a nod. "Mr. Jewell's stroke wasn't that serious. As long as he keeps up with treatment and recovery, there's still a good chance he'll improve a lot. I can't promise he'll go completely back to normal, but recovery is definitely possible.

"I also mentioned before that he could try needle therapy. If it works well, the only lasting issues might be a slight droop around his mouth and a bit of a limp when he walks. Other than that, he should be fine."

Nelson had already explained all this to Wynette before.

Back then, Wynette had tried persuading Ryker to move back home, but he stubbornly refused and insisted on staying at the center.

Neither she nor Kaylee could talk him out of it. In the end, they let him be.

Now, after hearing Nelson say the same thing again, Wynette spoke up once more. "I'd like to bring him home today. Could you help prepare his medicine for me to take home? Once he runs out, I'll come back for another prescription."

The treatment center where Ryker stayed was attached to Grace Hospital. The two places were part of the same medical facility.

Nelson worked at Grace Hospital and came over to the center every Wednesday and Friday to see patients.

After hearing Wynette's explanation, Nelson quickly printed out two documents. "The best thing for recovery is having family around," he said kindly. "If Mr. Jewell is willing to go home, it means he's slowly letting go of the past. That's a very good sign."

One paper was the discharge form. The other one listed the medications he still needed to take.
