A high-pitched ringing echoed in Helena's ears. Her head snapped to the side, a thin trail of blood welling at the corner of her mouth. The sheer force of Sebastian's strike was undeniable. Yet, Helena didn't feel a shred of pain; instead, a twisted sense of satisfaction washed over her. She figured she must have finally lost her mind.
After years of suffocating under Sebastian's absolute control, she was finally fighting back.
A reckless, scorched-earth kind of rebellion.
She hadn't even tried to dodge. She simply stood there, staring him down.
Her defiance struck a nerve. Sebastian's chest heaved with heavy, ragged breaths as his fury spiked.
He cracked his knuckles, the sharp pops echoing ominously through the dead silence of the master bedroom.
The metallic tang of blood lingered in the air from Helena's busted lip.
She just watched him, perfectly still.
They were locked in a tense standoff.
Sebastian forced his temper down. He knew she had backed him into a corner, and his breathing grew even heavier.
Right at that moment, his phone vibrated. It was Carter Miles.
The call snapped the explosive tension in the room; if it hadn't rung, someone might have ended up dead.
Sebastian turned away and answered it.
Helena exhaled a quiet breath.
She leaned against the chaise lounge for a long moment, waiting for the adrenaline to fade before standing up and walking out of the bedroom.
She refused to breathe the same air as him for a second longer.
Sebastian watched her leave, making no move to stop her.
They both needed space to cool off, or else he really might have killed her with his bare hands.
"Mr. Hayes," Carter's voice came through the line, rapid and urgent. "It's pure chaos out there. The press has already dug up Mrs. Hayes's identity. Ms. Ramirez couldn't handle the shock; she started spotting and had to be rushed to the hospital. There's no way we can keep her pregnancy under wraps now."
Carter paused briefly. "How do you want to handle this?"
It was a complete disaster on both fronts.
Helena had gone off script, and Janetta was breaking down.
The secret existence of Mrs. Hayes was out in the open, which meant Janetta was now officially branded as the other woman.
"But... if we kill the story today, what about Ms. Ramirez's birthday?" Carter asked cautiously.
"Kill it," Sebastian said, leaving zero room for debate.
Every year, Janetta's birthday party was a massive PR event.
Letting it pass without a single headline would sting her pride, but given the circumstances, he had no other choice.
He would make it up to her later.
Besides, she had always been sensible and understanding; she wouldn't hold this against him.
"I'm on it," Carter said before hanging up.
Sebastian stepped out of the master bedroom and headed toward Helena.
She seemed completely unbothered, standing in the kitchen making herself a cup of Milk Tea.
She had even cleaned up the wound on her cheek and the blood from her lip.
When Sebastian walked in, she didn't so much as glance in his direction.
