Sebastian lowered his gaze, concealing his rising irritation.
He would never intentionally embarrass Janetta to her face.
But her constant, passive-aggressive reminders were starting to grate on his nerves.
It felt entirely too deliberate.
His patience abruptly vanished. "I'm busy right now. I'll call you later," he said, his voice clipped.
Janetta was far too clever to miss the sudden shift in his tone.
"I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have bothered you now. Go back to work," she quickly replied.
"Yeah." Seeing her back down so obediently eased some of his annoyance.
She hung up immediately.
Sebastian tossed his phone onto the counter.
He fixed Helena with an icy stare. "Satisfied? As requested, I'm staying here. So you better keep your word and stay in line."
She was stunned.
No one understood Janetta's importance to him better than she did.
He had never once chosen her over his mistress.
But this time—
She quickly dropped her head, letting out a self-deprecating laugh.
She wasn't naive enough to think he stayed for her.
He stayed for the baby.
That was her only leverage.
He didn't love her, and he never would.
And that was fine. At least now she didn't have to constantly watch her back, waiting for him to plunge the knife in. She could finally focus on handling her affairs.
"I'll do what I promised," she replied coolly. "I'm exhausted. I'm going to lie down."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and headed back to the master bedroom.
She was drained to the bone.
Every conversation with him felt like running a marathon.
